Moving House with Young Children: A Stress-Free Guide for Busy Parents

Hey there, fellow super-parents! Let's talk about one of life's greatest - and most stressful, adventures: moving house with young children. As a mom and the founder of a home organization business, I get it – between managing the chaos of family life and running a business, there never seems to be enough hours in the day. But fear not, because I've been there, done that, and lived to tell the tale. So grab a cup of coffee (or let's be real, maybe a glass of wine), and let's dive into some practical tips to make your move a breeze.

When moving with kids I highly recommend getting child care for the actual moving day if this is possible. NOW is the time to call on friends and ask for favours - don’t be shy! Trust me, a few hours of uninterrupted time can work wonders to get settled in quickly.

Moving day itself is like orchestrating a symphony, with kids adding their own special blend of chaos to the mix. But with a bit of strategic planning, you can keep the kiddos entertained while you oversee the logistics. Pack a "moving day survival kit" filled with snacks, toys, activity books and a tablet loaded with their favorite shows - dont forget their charging cord either!

If kids are absolutely going to be taking part in the packing up stage of this endeavor, keep them entertained by arming them with their own set of packing supplies, like colorful markers and mini boxes, they'll feel like mini-movers in training. Not only does this keep them occupied, but it also gives them a sense of pride and ownership in the moving process. Plus, it buys you a few precious moments of sanity to tackle your own packing to-do list.

We all understand that moving means a lot of changed to our kid’s lives, and can feel daunting for them, so it's essential to create a sense of familiarity amidst the upheaval. Pack a special "moving day box" with their beloved toys, blankets, and bedtime stories to ease the transition. Once you've arrived at your new abode, prioritize setting up their bedrooms first. Having their familiar belongings within reach will reassure them that while the scenery may have changed, home is wherever their favorite stuffed animal resides.

I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again: ALL IS FAIR IN LOVE AND MOVING. And I absolutely mean it. This means you have guilt free permission to oder as much pizza as needed, enlist in services to outsource other tasks as you are able to (think instead of cleaning your old home yourself hire the darn cleaning company to do it for you!).

For an added bonus to help you on your way to moving bliss, download a copy of CLCO’s Moving Prep Guide which gives you a step by step process on what to pack first and how to do it along with a spreadsheet which contains a breakdown of what’s in each box in case you need to urgently find your kid’s art project supplies mid-move.
