From Dumping Ground to Functional Zone: A Realistic Garage Reset for Busy Moms

Dear Friend,

If your garage has become the official dumping ground of your home, I promise—you are so not alone.

I can’t tell you how many moms I’ve spoken to who say the same thing:

“I don’t even know what’s in there anymore.”
“It’s where everything goes when we don’t know where else to put it.”
“I feel overwhelmed just opening the door.”

Sound familiar? I get it. Between kids, school, work, and life, the garage is often the first space to fall apart and the last to get any attention. It becomes a catch-all for old strollers, outgrown skates, half-finished projects, donation bags that never left, and the mysterious pile of “I’ll deal with it later.”

But here’s the truth: the garage can be so much more than a clutter cave. With a little editing (yes, editing, not purging—we like to keep things gentle around here), this space can become a place that works for you, not against you.

So, where do you even start?

Start small. Don’t think “garage overhaul.” Think: one corner, one shelf, one category at a time. You don’t need to block off your entire weekend—just enough time to get the momentum going.

Start by asking:

  • What hasn’t been used in a year?

  • What’s broken, expired, or a total mystery?

  • What am I holding onto just because I don’t know what else to do with it?

We help our clients through this part all the time. And yes—we physically take away the donations at the end of your session. That alone can be a game-changer.

Then, give everything a home.

Garages work best when there’s a clear system. A space for the hockey gear, a shelf for tools and paint cans, bins for seasonal décor, a labeled tote for Costco overflow. When everything has a home, even your kids know where to put things back (okay, most of the time).

And if you’re tempted to go out and buy bins before starting, please don’t.
The organizing products come after the edit. That’s when we know exactly what’s staying, what kind of storage makes sense, and how much you actually need. Trust me, it saves time, money, and frustration.

Most importantly - go easy on yourself.

If your garage is in chaos, it’s not a reflection of your abilities as a parent or homeowner. It just means life has been busy, and the garage took the hit. That’s normal. That’s human. That’s why we exist.

So if you’re staring at your garage with dread every time you pull in, I want you to know you don’t have to do it alone. We’re here to help. Without judgment, without overwhelm—just calm support, functional systems, and a whole lot of “Let’s get this done.”
