Spring Cleaning Tips
Spring is here and with that comes Spring Cleaning!
It’s time to open up the windows, let the fresh air in and get your home organized and ready for warmer weather. In additional to the usual nitty-gritty deep cleaning, take this time to get some much needed organization done as well. Here are a few key places to get your tidy on:
The Kitchen
Be honest with yourself: Have you used this in the last 2 years? Normally we recommend the 1 year rule, however, I’m extending due to the fact that we are not entertaining nearly as much as normal. It is time to recycle your beat up and broken cooking utensils, ones that are melted or burnt etc. The kitchen is a place for gadgets galore and believe me – nobody has the space for single use items anymore! There is no need for an avocado slicer or a cherry seed remover – there just isn’t! These single use items should be the first to go from your kitchen spaces. When purging your plastic reusable containers inspect each one carefully for scratches, stains and ones that do not have lids. There are very affordable replacement options at the dollar store or Bed Bath & Beyond that have both plastic or glass options.
Closets
Did you know that the majority of Canadians only wear 26% of the clothing they own regularly? Crazy right?! With this being said I encourage you to take a deep dive into your wardrobe and make some edits on clothing you no longer wear, does not fit or is stained and damaged. Now is also the perfect time to swap out your seasonal winter clothing for spring and summer clothes & shoes. TIP: if you have the budget and want to make a major change in the aesthetic of your closet, try swapping out the hangers for all matching sets – it makes a statement when you open the door and will allow you to look at each piece individually for editing during the hanger swap. Add a pretty basket for sandals and flats to keep them organized and accessible within your closet spaces.
Bathroom
If you’re like me, you love a good skin care or makeup sample but these can really accumulate in your cupboards! Look on the back of each of your cosmetics and you’ll see a little container and marking of: 6M/12M/24M this is the amount of months the product has before expiring after opening. If you know it’s been way longer than that, its time to let it go. Bacteria can accumulate in makeup and cause infections that are far from pleasant. When your done sorting and purging, clean out the drawers and use a drawer insert to keep cosmetics neat and tidy.
